cell_phone_batteriesI have always wondered how I can get more out of my cell phone batteries? Nowadays, in the world of great technologies, a cell phone has not been used only as a luxury item, but also as a necessity. If you use your cell phone mostly for business and personal reasons, then you have certainly noticed that the life of battery has become more and more demanding. Cell phone batteries are a vital part of any mobile phone, but with proper care you can make your them last for a longer period of time. The cost of the phones can vary from $20 into the hundreds depending on different options like browsing the internet,  playing music, taking pictures and even shooting video. So, I would like to give you several helpful hints on how to extend the battery life, and also show you how some little things can make a big difference.

-  Follow the guidelines provided by the factory on proper charging and discharging of your battery. Most new model phones have lithium-ion batteries, while others have nickel based batteries the type of which is labeled on the battery itself. If your cellphone uses the Nickel battery, you should let the battery first fully discharge before charging again. If you partially charge the battery a few times, the battery will forget and will think its fully charged. Therefore, it will have to be reconditioned which is not the case with a lithium-ion battery, as after being fully discharged it will have to be fully charged, but without being kept on the charger for too much time. Make sure you only use the charger that came with the phone, regardless of the battery type.

- You should always keep your phone cell cool as in that way you extend the life of its battery. So, avoid leaving your cell phone at places where it can be exposed to sunlight, since the excessive use at high temperatures will cause the cell phone battery to fail.

- In order to obtain maximum capacity you have to initialize a brand new battery although the indicator on the phone may tell you otherwise. You have to charge and discharge Nickel batteries 2-4 times and should have an initial charge of at least 16 hours. On the other hand the lithium-ion batteries need to be charged for 4-6 hours before being used, which mostly depends on the model.

Note: It has proved as a good idea not to fully discharge a lithium-ion battery. Well, the life of the cell phone batteries is shortened each time you fully discharge them, so when the battery indicator goes to one bar, go ahead and recharge.

- Little has anyone heard of battery storage before, but if you don’t need to use your cell phone batteries for a long period of time, don’t store them next to any metal objects –store them at some cool place. Besides, you don’t have to freeze the batteries thus being sure that the battery is not exposed to any moisture. Lithium batteries won’t work in refrigerated temperatures, so leave them at the room temperature for an hour or so before you use them. You should always recharge the battery after storing.

- Check if the battery contacts are clean on the phone, as they may accumulate dirt over time. This is necessary in order to get maximum energy transfer. Try cleaning them with rubbing alcohol by dabbing the area with a cotton swab. In case there is any corrosion on the phone, it might have appeared due to the fretting, which occurs when you have 2 different metal types, like gold and tin, that make up the contacts. If this happens, clean it with some acetone or nail polish remover with a Q-Tip in order not to damage the plastic case.

All these hints are very halpful and they will certainly make your cell phone batteries last longer and increase your cell phone usage time, too.
